The Sky Falleth

I have issues with Fall, a.k.a. the end of everything good, a.k.a. Summer. Oh, I love the 'idea' of Fall--the fair weather, the crisp air, the beautiful leaves. And I enjoy thoroughly those things when they happen. It's just I can't get past my nagging dread of doom, a.k.a. WINTER. In Utah, I swear, we enjoy about a week of that idealic Fall fairytale, and then BAM!! It's six feet of snow and thermal underwear. Frozen tundra living, day in and day out for seven months. It makes me more than a little craaaaazy. Why in the world doesn't every citizen in this state run screaming for California when the first leaf turns yellow??

We happen to live directly under a major geese migration path. Every year, starting in mid-August, these geese come in flocks, honking like crazy, and glide southward over our house. It was quite charming for the first few years, and then I realized WHY they are getting the heck out of dodge. Winter is coming!! Run, fly, do what you have to to escape!! That's what I hear in their honk-honking. And I know it's not really fair to take it out on the birds, but every year, the first time I hear them coming,I put down my lemonade, stand up on my lawn chair, and shake my fist at them. I really wouldn't blame them if they pooped on me (although that wouldn't do much to improve our relationship). Maybe I'm just jealous that they get to follow their instincts and head for warmer pastures.

That all being said, this year I have really, really tried to carpe diem and ignore the dread. It has been GORGEOUS weather here--low to mid 80's--for WEEKS, and I just couldn't be more pleased. I have tried to point it out every chance I get, say thanks for it in prayers, hug every tree I can find, and rescue every beached whale I see...all in hopes that I'll build up good weather karma. Isn't that how this works?

And so....here's some pictures from our jaunt up the canyon yesterday. Just me and the girls, and we had so much fun!

Oh, and did I tell you? As part of a limited-time offer, every "oooh" and "aaaah" earns you 5 points of personal weather karma. Act now!!

Ok I totally get your dread of winter, because it's just as bad here if not worse. BUT, I love fall! I was just thinking the other day how much I'd like to take a drive and do the Alpine loop and see all those gorgous aspens in full color.
Your pictures a beautiful, the foliage and especially your girls. Enjoy it while it lasts. :)

I love the pictures!

It could be worse. At least you don't have 9 months of rain, clouds, and more rain.

THANK YOU! I have been saying this very same thing for as long as I can remember. Yeah, yeah fall is nice but we all know what's coming. Yuck, I just hate winter. Maybe we can get together and commiserate. :)

Many many ooh's and ah's over the pictures! It makes me sad that we don't believe in fall here in Arizona, but fall means many happy things are coming here! (Like overnight lows in the 60's instead of the 80's and daytime high's in the 80's!) I'm just feeling happier and happier every day, so come and see us, we've got plenty of room! Just bring me a few fall leaves.

I understand the loud gasps at the art gallery, your toenail fetish and wasteful milk practices but hating fall? Autumn? The most beautiful time of the year? Granted, I'm in New York and we trump your leaf color so maybe you really don't have anything to get excited about but still, my winter is far worse than yours and I still cannot get enough of fall! When the wind blows and the leaves fall so consistently it's like leaf rain showers without the rain. Peak color season leads to Halloween, Halloween leads to Thanksgiving, Thanksgiving leads to Christmas and somewhere in there the snow hits and it's clean and pure and makes the prettiest pictures. Then it all closes out with that wonderful non-denominational, religion-free break! What's not to like.

Now January, there's a miserable time of year for you.

The pictures are all beautiful! I am dreading the winter as well. I love walking outside and not needing a jacket.

BEAUTIFUL! That first one is my favorite.

I totally hear you on being grateful in prayers, hugging trees... I've been wearing all the skirts and short sleeves and spending every moment possible (even in the middle of my workday!) outdoors. I say I'm like a squirrel gathering acorns to prepare for winter - soaking up the sun while I can.

Whoever Angie is, I'll bet she lives by me!!! Gorgeous girls--gorgeous leaves. I've been oohing and ahhhing for hours, so I expect tropical breezes any day now.

Dear Tessa,

Study your mother; her mannerisms, her sense of humor, her expressions. You are turning into her. BEWARE. Little on the "ham" side.
